Chemistry Olympics

The aim of this handwriting activity is to practice and automate writing letters of the alphabet. It is important that the sequence of letters is written correctly. Varying the size and speed of writing the letters enhances the coordination between the eye and hand, as well as the planning and execution of movements involved in writing. Through variation and repetition, the letter sequence and its movement are internalised. Only an internalised, well-automated letter sequence leads to relaxed, fluent writing.

Required material

Colored pencils, paper clip, printed templates (see resources below).

How to play

Choose the letter you'd like to practice. Place the paper clip on the wheel and rest the top of the pencil on it. Hold the pencil with one hand and use the other hand to spin the paper clip.

If the paper clip lands on the test tube, color in one section of the test tube. The test tube has five sections to fill in. For example, there are 3 colored sections in the picture above.

If the paper clip stops on a pair of icons, you'll need to write the chosen letter in the corresponding table cell. Each icon corresponds with a different writing style:

  • Microscope: Write small letters
  • Glasses: Write medium-sized letters
  • Magnifying glass: Write large letters
  • Hourglass: Write slowly
  • Stopwatch: Write at your normal speed
  • Bomb: Write quickly

If a cell is already filled in, rewrite the letter next to or over the existing ones.

Your goal is to beat the chemist. You win if you manage to fill in all the table cells before the test tube is completely colored in.
